这部电影由于导演罗柏·艾格斯童年时对巫术相当著迷。在不成功的拍摄“太奇怪”、“太模糊”的电影后，艾格斯意识到他必须制作一个更传统的电影[7]。他在“问与答”上说“如果我要做一部类型式的电影，它必须是个人式的电影，而且要非常的好[7]。”制作团队广泛于英国与美国博物馆，与17世纪农业专家提供谘询英语合作。[8]
艾格斯想要拍摄新英格兰的取景照，但是缺乏税额，他不得不适应加拿大[7]。事实证明这对艾格斯有一大个问题，因为他找不到该国家的森林环境拍摄[7]。他不得不离开地图地标寻找到了一个偏远极端的地点（位于安大略省的Kiosk）；艾格斯说“最近的小镇“Hampshire”看起来像大都市。”[7]
为了给予电影真正的感觉，艾格斯为了拍摄室内的自然光源唯一的灯光只有蜡烛。艾格斯还选择了“VVitch”作为电影的标题与海报，他表示，发现这个拼写出现在一本詹姆士一世时期的小说，以及其他期刊。[9]
